El primer contacto de la madre con la lactancia materna se realiza en la unidad de puérperas y el personal de enfermería de estas unidades debe apoyar a la madre y al recién nacido en la tarea de la alimentación. La enfermera debe evaluar el agarre, comprobar el trabajo de succión, y saber detectar problemas en el recién nacido, tales como la aparición de hipoglucemia y deshidratación. Lo importante es que el recién nacido se alimente correctamente y si, en estas primeras horas, no se consigue una lactancia satisfactoria deberá saber evaluar la necesidad de utilizar suplementos. Con la práctica diaria se debe intentar conseguir una lactancia materna efectiva. Es muy importante la labor del personal de enfermería en estas primeras horas para que la madre no abandone la lactancia materna y para que ni madre ni bebé desarrollen problemas. 

Abstract

The first contact of the mother with breastfeeding occurs after childbirth in the mother and baby unit, and the nurses of these units should support both mother and newborn baby in the task of feeding. Nurses have to assess latching on, check sucking, and know detect problems in the newborn, such as the appearance of hypoglycemia and dehydration. The most important thing is that newborn is properly fed and if, in these early hours, a satisfactory breastfeeding is not accomplished, they should know evaluate the need to use supplements. An efficient breastfeeding should be acquired with daily practice. The work of nurses is very important in these early hours in order to prevent that mothers abandon breastfeeding and that both mother and baby develop problems.
